What do you need to be happy? Who do you need to be, to be happy?
Do you need money? Do you need friends? Do you need power? Love? Material belongings?
Do you need to be healthier? Do you need to be more productive? Smarter? Sexier?
We all have some idea of who we should be, of who we wish we were, in the back of our heads. This hypothetical “Me” is often seen as a higher self, a better self, but the truth is... it’s not.
The person we think we’re supposed to be is the source of our suffering. It’s a make up of other people’s opinions and society telling us what’s best for us or how we can be better. When the reality is, you’re as close to perfect as can be, just as you are.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t have goals, that we shouldn’t strive for greatness. It’s just a realization that YOU, right here, right now, are perfectly ok. This need to have something more, to be something more, as soon as possible, is a false idea.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath.
What 5 things can you see?
What 4 things can you hear?
What 3 things can you feel?
What 2 things can you smell?
What’s 1 thing you can taste?
Finally... are you okay? Does anything need to change? Is being alive and breathing enough for you to find happiness in this moment?
I promise you it is. There is always something to be grateful for. Something to be proud of. Some way of connecting with the world around us in a meaningful way, even if it’s just realizing that you enjoy the colour of the walls, the smell of the air, or the feeling of the breeze against your skin.
Our false needs, our constant wanting for something that won’t actually bring happiness, is the root of our suffering.
Stop trying to be someone you’re not. Accept and cherish the person you are right now. We all deserve to be happy ❤️.
Thanks for reading and as always,
Wishing you welI.
